House of Joy began with a simple belief from our founder: books have the power to help us feel seen, understood, and connected. What started as a love of storytelling for him has grown into an independent bookshop rooted in community, curiosity, and care.

We believe everyone deserves access to stories that reflect the richness of the world around us. That’s why we champion diverse voices, celebrate underrepresented authors, and thoughtfully curate books that inspire conversation, spark imagination, and bring joy. From bestselling favourites to hidden gems, every title on our shelves is chosen with intention.

But House of Joy is about more than books. We’re building a welcoming space where people can gather, discover something new, and feel part of a community. Through book clubs, creative events, family activities, and meaningful conversations, we hope to create a place that feels warm, inclusive, and full of possibility.

At its heart, House of Joy is a reflection of what we believe in: the power of stories, the importance of representation, and the joy that comes from connecting with others. Whether you’re a lifelong reader or just beginning your reading journey, we’re so glad you’re here.

What’s On at House of Joy Clubs and Events

OPEN BOOK

Join us for our monthly book club at the House of Joy! We meet on the last Tuesday of every month starting at 6:30 PM. You can grab your copy of each month's book in-store or online. For August, we’ll be reading Abdulrazak Gurnah’s Theft.

Joy

MARSHMALLOW TASTER

The inspiration behind our name and a daily reminder to both Erica and Ryan of why creating a joyful, welcoming space for everyone matters. Joy is mostly known for her impressive ability to eat marshmallows by the cup load; she also dabbles in children's books. Feel free to ask her a question, although she will probably say no.

CHILDREN & COMMUNITY LEAD

House of Joy was founded by Ryan with the vision of creating a welcoming space where books, coffee and conversation bring people together. Ryan can be found day-to-day running House of Joy alongside our amazing team of volunteers. If you're looking for your next great read, ask him for his favourite non-fiction picks or some incredible Black writers to check out!

Erica leads our Little Readers sessions and children's events, helping to create joyful experiences for young readers and their families while shaping our children’s book collection. Erica is your go-to person for all things kid-related! As a Key Stage 1 teacher, she knows exactly which books will catch a young reader's eye and spark their imagination.

Our Volunteers

House of Joy is supported by an incredible team of volunteers who help keep shelves stocked, welcome customers, run & support events and make the shop feel like home.
